Remodeling a kitchen is a service that frequently offers the most return on your investment. Kitchens are the focal point of the home. Renovations can be a big project, yes, but if your kitchen is in need of renovations – especially if it’s a much older property – then your chances of adding to your equity increase significantly.

Still, a kitchen is meant to be used. While there is immense potential value in improving a kitchen, a kitchen is only as good as it is functional. Function still always has to come first, and to truly understand how you use a kitchen, you have to first… use a kitchen.

Paying Attention to How You Cook

Many people buy a home and rush to remodel it. But before you remodel a kitchen, make sure you use your existing one and take note of how you use it.

By that, we mean:

  • How many different types of pots do you use and how much space will they require?
  • Do you prefer the knives near the oven or near the sink?
  • How many plates/bowls, etc. do you expect to use?
  • What type of cooking do you do? Do you need a lot of stove space?
  • How many items are cooking in the oven at the same time?
  • What would be the ideal way to organize the food in your cabinets?

Your kitchen needs to be focused on convenience. You have to decide where things should go in order to best utilize space. That means actively cooking in your existing kitchen and making note of what you typically do in there.

Figure out what’s convenient and inconvenient. Notice your habits as you cook. Look at how full your pantry is and the size of all the items in there.

Basically, don’t DoorDash or eat out for a while. Cook as much as possible at home and then evaluate what you need your kitchen to have, where you need things to be located, how much space you need, and more.

Once you use your kitchen in this way, you’ll be able to have a much better idea of the setup that will bring your kitchen the most value to you – and presumably to other people that will someday own the home.
