Schedule Your Home Upgrades Now to Save Money in the Long Term

Over the past few years, we’ve spoken with many people that were delaying their home upgrades hoping that the price of materials would drop. We’re now two years on, and not only are they not dropping, but they are continuing to increase.

There is also very little reason to believe that they’ll ever go down from here. Most companies are projecting prices to increase even more, and should a trade war start, the cost of materials will increase even more significantly.

That means that there may never be a better time to lock in prices now, before they get higher.

Why Your Home Upgrades Shouldn’t Wait

One important thing to understand about the world of construction materials is that, as soon as a price increases, the company is unlikely to ever decrease it *even if their own costs go down*. The only exceptions are if there is a wild swing from a severe shortage to an overwhelming surplus.

You can see this in the cost of concrete over time. Since 1990, there has never been a drop in the price of concrete more than 2%, while the cost itself has increased as much as 1000%. You can see a similar trend in the cost of asphalt shingles, where the price doesn’t typically move much but it absolutely does not go down. Windows are in a similar situation, as the price of windows has not decreased even one time in the past 10 years.

What about the cost of products that can be over and underproduced, like redwood?

Though it goes up and down here and there, the only time it experienced a noticeable drop was in the years during and right after COVID. Beyond that, it tends to stay at a typically high level and only jumps up, not down.

There is a tendency to notice that a price has increased and think that, maybe, if you just wait a bit, the price will go back down. When there were some serious supply chain issues in 2020, this mindset made a little bit of sense as everyone looked to try to determine how much of the price increase was because of this historic even and how much was here to stay.

Well, we know now that even as the supply chain issues were fixed, the price of these materials has not dropped. If we add in the risks of economic uncertainty, we’re looking at a situation where the only direction that these materials costs can go is up.
